Emotionally Based School Avoidance (EBSA)

We recognise that some children may find it extremely difficult to attend school due to emotional or psychological distress. Emotionally Based School Avoidance (EBSA) can be a complex and challenging experience for both children and families, and we are committed to offering understanding, flexible and compassionate support.

Our approach to EBSA is built on strong relationships, early identification, and a personalised response. We work closely with families to understand each child’s unique situation and develop a graduated support plan that feels safe and manageable. This may include flexible timetables, reduced or phased transitions, safe spaces within school, or one-to-one emotional support with a trusted adult such as an ELSA or pastoral staff member.

We collaborate with external agencies(such as educational psychologists, MHST, or the LA attendance teams) where needed, to ensure a coordinated and informed approach. Throughout, we maintain a non-judgemental stance, prioritising trust and wellbeing over attendance statistics.

Our ultimate aim is to help children rebuild their confidence, re-engage with learning at a pace that feels right for them, and feel secure within the school community.

We are here to listen, to work together, and to support each child in finding a positive path forward.

If you are concerned about EBSA, please do not hesitate to contact us.
