Poet in Residence

Poet in Residence

We are incredibly proud to introduce our Poet in Residence, Joseph Roberts, a celebrated local writer whose work shines a light on the beauty and richness of community voice. Rooted in the rhythms and expressions of local dialect, Joseph brings poetry to life in a way that resonates deeply with our children’s lived experiences.

Through workshops, assemblies, and collaborative projects, Joseph helps our children explore their own identities and celebrate where they come from. By encouraging children to write and perform using the language they hear at home and in their communities, Joseph fosters a strong sense of belonging, self-worth, and pride.

Our poetry sessions go far beyond creative writing; they are a powerful tool for building confidence, developing voice, and nurturing emotional literacy. Whether it’s capturing a memory, describing a street, or celebrating family, our children learn that their stories matter and their voices deserve to be heard.

As a school, we are committed to helping every child feel seen, valued and connected. Our partnership with Joseph is a joyful and powerful part of that mission.

Please take a look at a poem our Year 6s wrote following a series of workshops with Joseph, ‘We’re from the Woody’:

‘We’re from the Woody’

We are so proud to be based on the amazing Woodchurch Estate.

Our Year 6s worked exceptionally hard to put this poem together; it shows off their pride in their local community perfectly.
