Pupil Premium

Pupil Premium

What is Pupil Premium?

The Pupil Premium is additional funding given to schools in England to help improve the attainment and opportunities of children from disadvantaged backgrounds. The aim is to ensure that all pupils, regardless of their background or financial situation, can reach their full potential.

Who is eligible?

Pupil Premium funding is allocated to schools for pupils who:

  • Are currently eligible for free school meals (FSM)
  • Have been eligible for FSM at any point in the last six years (known as ‘Ever 6’)
  • Are looked after by the local authority (CLA)
  • Have previously been looked after and are now adopted or under a special guardianship/residence order
  • Have a parent serving in the armed forces (these pupils receive a smaller amount of ‘Service Premium’)

How is it used?

Schools have the freedom to use Pupil Premium funding in the way they feel will best support the needs of eligible pupils. This may include:

  • Providing additional support in English and Maths
  • Offering small group or one-to-one interventions
  • Supporting emotional wellbeing and mental health
  • Funding educational visits, clubs or enrichment activities
  • Investing in staff training and resources to close the attainment gap
