Transition

Transition

We know that moving on to a new class or a new school is an exciting step, but it can also feel a little daunting. At our school, we put great care into supporting children through every stage of transition – whether that’s joining us from nursery, moving up to a new year group or preparing to leave for secondary school.

From Nursery to Reception

We work closely with our local nurseries and early years providers to make sure children have a smooth start to school life. Staff visit nurseries, meet children in their familiar settings and gather important information from key workers and families. We also hold welcome sessions and stay-and-play opportunities, so children (and parents!) can get to know their new classroom and teachers before September.

Year-to-Year Transitions

Each summer, children spend time with their new teachers and visit their new classrooms to help them feel settled. Teachers meet to share detailed information about every child’s progress, strengths, and needs, ensuring that no child’s learning journey is interrupted. We also build in extra support for children who may find change more challenging.

From Primary to Secondary

We have strong links with our local secondary school and work closely with them to make sure the move from Year 6 is a positive experience. Secondary staff visit our school to meet pupils, and children take part in induction days and transition activities (starting a long time before Year 6!). We share information about learning and wellbeing, so that every child feels known and supported from day one.

At every stage, our priority is to make sure children feel confident, secure, and excited about the next step in their journey. With strong partnerships between families, our school, and our feeder schools, we ensure that transitions are happy and successful experiences for all.
